About: Fulbright Chapter
Howdy Fulbrighters:
Congratulations on your selection as a
Fulbright Scholar. As a Fulbright
Scholar, you are joining a tradition which
began in 1945 following World War II when
United States Senator William Fulbright
proposed to establish a program that would
promote “mutual understanding between the
people of the United States and the people
of other countries of world.” This
innovative proposal was signed into law in
1946 and so began the tradition of Fulbright
scholars throughout the world. The
Fulbright program includes several different
types of exchange programs, including the
exchange of pre-doctoral fellowships, of
which you are a part.
Over 1800
new Fulbright scholars come to the United
States each year, studying at many different US
universities. Texas
A&M University is proud to have one of
the largest number of Fulbright grantees
studying in various masters and doctoral
programs and even a few special
undergraduate programs. I am always proud
to announce that the Texas A&M Fulbright
Association represents the most diverse
group on campus with students currently
enrolled from South America including
Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador,
Paraguay, Peru and from Central America
including Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico.
Reaching across the globe, from Africa we
have Botswana, Cameroon, Mauritius, South
Africa, Togo, and Zimbabwe and Southern Asia
is made up India and Pakistan while Pacific
Asia is been represented by Indonesia,
Malaysia and Viet Nam, and Central Asia by Afgha-nistan. The Middle East is
represented by Bahrain, Iraq,
Jordan, and Oman. From Europe, we have
Germany, Lithuania, Macedonia, Russia, and
Spain. Of course, our Fulbright Former
Student have included many other countries
such as Bangladesh, Bolivia, Cambodia,
Hungary, Laos, Morocco, the Netherlands,
Panama, Poland among others.
In
addition to the
Student Fulbright Association, we are
fortunate here at Texas A&M to have a very
active “Senior” (Faculty) Association
sharing many activities together throughout
the year. Please check the
Fulbright
Association website for highlights of these
events.
On the
Fulbright website you will also find the
Association’s newsletter written by the
students addressing many different issues.
Many of our Fulbrighters are gifted writers
willing to share experiences with their
fellow students. You will also find our
Fulbrighters are recipients of many research
awards.
I would
also like to share with our website visitors
a very special Fulbright program here at
Texas A&M and at the University of
Arkansas. Following the disaster of Tsunami
that devastated the island of Ache in
Indonesia, Former Presidents Bill Clinton
and George Bush, working together as a team
to raise funds for the Tsunami Relief,
decided to put some of the funds into the
Fulbright program for students from Ache to
help in the rebuilding of Ache.
Presidential libraries of the former
Presidents are located at Texas A&M and at
the University of Arkansas at Little Rock,
thus the Tsunami Relief Fulbrighters are
primarily enrolled at both universities.
The
Sponsored Student Programs (SSP) office
coordinates the academic programs for our
Fulbrighters and our SSP staff would like to
extend to all Fulbrighters a hearty welcome
to Texas A&M where “Howdy” is heard
everywhere, where tradition is a way of
life, and where you not only become
initiated as life-long member of the
Fulbright family, but the Aggie family as
well. We have a saying once a Fulbrighter
always a Fulbrighter and once an Aggie
always an Aggie – this is tradition.
