CINTAX: Free Tax Preparation Software

What is CINTAX?
CINTAX is a web-based program designed specifically to assist international students and other nonresidents for tax purposes with filing the federal income tax return.  CINTAX is a user-friendly program that asks you a series of questions, and then generates the applicable, completed forms specific to you.  You then print, sign and mail your return (please note that CINTAX does not electronically file returns). International Student Services (ISS) purchases a group license each year to provide CINTAX to you free of charge.
ISS emails the password to access CINTAX, along with further instructions, to students’ NEO accounts in February. If you are unable to access your NEO account at that time, or do not receive this email, you may obtain the password by visiting the front counter of ISS in Bizzell Hall East. International faculty, staff, and scholars will receive the password from International Faculty and Scholar Services.  CINTAX will be accessible using this password until July 1, 2008.

Introduction to CINTAX Sessions
ISS will conduct several sessions to provide an introduction to CINTAX for students who are not familiar with it, want help getting started, have questions about the program, or who have general tax questions.  Sessions will be held at the Student Computing Center, so students are encouraged to bring tax and immigration documents in order to start completing the return during the session.  Before attending a session, you will need to set-up a login-id by using CLAIM in one of the Open Access Labs.

What if I cannot use CINTAX?
If you have tried and are unable to use CINTAX to generate your tax forms, for example if you are now a resident for tax purposes, you will need to complete paper forms. Forms and publications may be obtained directly from the IRS online at http://www.irs.gov, and also at many local libraries and post offices.

Professional Accountants

If the resources available to you are not adequate enough for you to file your tax return independently, you may choose to consult a professional accountant. While these services are very helpful, they can also be costly. You will need to consider carefully the degree of need versus expense before using such a service. Before you enter into an agreement with a professional tax preparer, be sure to ask if they have experience completing forms for international students. Local accountants can be identified by searching the yellow pages of the phone book. Many Americans rely on professional accountants to do their taxes; however, we wish to point out that accounting services are privately run businesses and we cannot vouch for nor endorse the services of any particular accountant. You may want to ask other international students for recommendations or call the Better Business Bureau at 979-260-2222 to inquire whether there are complaints against businesses you consider.
