Initial Expenses at Texas A&M University

 PRINT

The average tuition and fee cost for international students is US$5,500 (9 credit hours) or more a semester, depending on the number of classes taken. If you have an assistantship (graduate students only) you may be qualified to pay resident or "in state tuition." This will reduce your tuition and fee cost by approximately US$2500 per semester. Graduate assistants will receive their first university paycheck at the end of the first full month of work.

Because of this, all students should bring about US$5,000 to US$5,500 in traveler's checks (which can be used immediately) for resettling costs (apartment rent, deposits, utilities, and telephone), for opening your bank account and for establishing your household. If you bring bank or personal checks, allow for two weeks processing time at the bank before you will be able to use the money. This is very important because at least 1/2 of your tuition and required fee payment must be made before classes begin.

For estimates concerning your expenses, please refer to Cost of Attendance page by Student Business Services . For the amounts of funding needed for receiving an I-20 or DS-2019, refer to the I-20/DS-2019 Status for New Students page. At least $3,150 for living expenses per year will be needed for a spouse and for each child. Many students will work on-campus; however, work is not guaranteed and work authorization for off-campus is not easily obtained. The University offers very few scholarships to new international students. You may also require additional funds for medical insurance and transportation. Please refer to related sections for details.
